Smithfield, R.I. (March 31, 2018) - The Mount St. Mary's baseball team dropped a pair of games at Bryant on Saturday. The Bulldogs topped the Mountaineers 9-2 in the first game of the doubleheader and 9-3 in the second game.
GAME 1: Bryant 9, Mount 2
Six run inning powers Bryant past Mount St. Mary's 9-2 in the first game of the doubleheader. Vaughn Parker II recorded a multi-hit game going 2 for 4 with two doubles and a run scored. The Mount's only two runs of the game were plated from a sacrifice fly by Patrick Causa and a single from Andrew Malone. Michael Yetter pitched 1.1 innings in relief while giving up no runs on just one hit and striking out one batter for the Mountaineers.
After two scoreless innings to start the game, the Mount pushed across the first run of the game in the top of the third inning. Jared Urban led off the inning with an infield single and advanced to second on a groundout to the pitcher from Myles Nicholson. The next batter, Alex Kriss worked a walk to put runners on second and first with one out. After a wild pitch advanced Urban to third and Kriss to second, Causa hit a sacrifice fly out to left field that plated Urban for the Mountaineer's first run of the game.
Bryant came roaring back, scoring six runs on six hits in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 6-1 lead. After a triple to lead off the inning, Angelini was plated on a single to left field from Wright for the Bulldogs first run of the inning. Panno doubled down the left field line that brought Kelly home to score the sixth run of the inning for Bryant. The scoring was highlighted by back-to-back doubles from Gasper and Kelly to push three runs across the board in the inning.
Mount St. Mary's added one run in the top of the sixth inning before the Bulldogs answered with three straight runs of their own, two runs in the bottom of the sixth and one run in the bottom of the seventh. For the Mount, Parker hit his second double of the game to lead off the sixth inning and was later plated on a RBI single from Malone. Bryant's runs were scored off of two singles from Gasper and Panno in the sixth inning while the last run of the game was brought home to cross the plate on a wild pitch in the seventh inning.
Michael Collins (1-4) picked up the loss for Mount St. Mary's and Steve Theetge (1-6) recorded the win for Bryant.
GAME 2: Bryant 9, Mount 3
Late rally lifts Bryant past Mount St. Mary's 9-3 in the second game of the doubleheader. Nicholson, Kriss, and Causa all recorded two hits in the loss for the Mountaineers while tabbing six of the seven hits for the Mount in the top three spots of the lineup. Causa went 2 for 4 with two singles and the only RBI for Mount St. Mary's.
The Mount and Bryant traded runs in the first inning with the Mountaineers grabbing the early one run lead before the Bulldogs answered with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Causa hit a RBI single that plated Nicholson for the first run of the game and Ward homered to lead off the bottom of the first inning to even everything at one run apiece.
Bryant added two more runs, one in the bottom of the third inning and one in the bottom of the sixth, to jump out to a 3-1 lead after six innings. In the bottom of the third, Ciliento came home to cross the plate off of a sacrifice fly from Cruz and in the bottom of the sixth, Ricciardi hit a sacrifice fly to left field that plated Angelini.
The Mountaineers crawled back in it scoring two runs in the top of the seventh inning to even the game again, this time at 3-3. Zack Costello and CJ Kozorosky scored on two different throwing errors in the inning for the Mount's last two runs of the game. The Bulldogs responded by scoring six straight runs, four runs in the bottom of the seventh and two more runs in the bottom of the eighth, to secure a 9-3 win. The scoring was highlighted by a two run homerun from Panno in the seventh inning and a two RBI single from Cruz. Cruz finished the game 2 for 4 with three runs batted in and one run scored to lead the offense for Bryant.
Andrew Dameron (0-1) received the loss for Mount St. Mary's and Craig Lacey (2-1) picked up the win for the Bulldogs. The Mount falls to 6-14 on the season with a mark of 2-3 in Northeast Conference (NEC) play and Bryant moves to 11-13 on the year with a 3-3 mark in NEC play.
The Mountaineers travel to Coppin State for a mid-week matchup on Wednesday, April 4 at 3:00 PM.
