Emmitsburg, Md. (February 17, 2012)--Mount St. Mary's University will honor the 1962 Men's Basketball National Championship team at halftime of tomorrow's game against Monmouth.
The ceremony caps the Mount's season-long celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the 1962 National Championship team. The first 1,000 fans to the game will receive a 50th Anniversary Rally Towel and commemorative pins.
The 1962 team defeated Sacramento State, 58-57, in overtime, on March 17, 1962, to earn the NCAA College Division National title. Dick Talley led the Mount with 23 points and eight rebounds in the victory while Ed Pfeiffer added 13 points.
The Mount won its final 10 games of the year, including a 67-64 quadruple-overtime win against Albright in the NCAA East Regionals. Mount St. Mary's finished the year with a 24-6 record.
Fourteen members of the team, including head coach Jim Phelan, players and managers, will be present at the game.
Tip-off against Monmouth is set for 7:00 p.m. at Knott Arena.
