Mount Men's Soccer keep Tournament hopes alive with 1-0 win over Long Island

EMMITSBURG, Md. (Nov. 3, 2019) - On the right foot of Yann Kouemi, the Mount St. Mary's men's soccer team kept their postseason dreams alive with a 1-0 victory over Long Island in Sunday's home finale at Waldron Family Stadium.

The sophomore's goal came in the 49th minute via a cross from Miguel Lucero, playing in his final home contest for the Mountaineers. Kouemi earned his team best ninth goal of the season, and Lucero tallied his seventh assist.

With the victory, the Mount improves to 7-9 (3-5 NEC) and is still alive for the Northeast Conference tournament. The Mountaineers need another win in the season finale against Fairleigh Dickinson next Sunday (Nov. 10), along with some help.

Mount St. Mary's was in control for most of the first half, doubling the Sharks in shots 6-3. Several of the shots were just off target and the Long Island (8-7-1, 5-2-1 NEC) keeper registered a pair of saves. Kouemi, Kyle Davis, and Marcos Lucero finished with two shots each.

It took four minutes into the second half for Kouemi to break the deadlock, and then Mount went on the defensive. The Sharks continued to creep up the field, firing eight shots set up by four corner kicks. But the Mountaineer defense held firm, bouyed by four saves from Riccardo Zonta. Keanu Tuart led Long Island in shots with four, with two on goal.

Kickoff from Teaneck next weekend is scheduled for 1 p.m. The Mount is looking to join Saint Francis U and Long Island, who have already punched their ticket to the NEC postseason.
