Mount Softball Splits Twinbill at Delaware

Newark, Del. (March 16, 2019)--Mount St. Mary's rallied to post a 7-3 win in the second game to earn a split at Delaware on Saturday afternoon.  Kaylee Stoner drove home four runs in the game two victory while Kaia Bonshock went 4-for-7 at the plate on the day.  The Blue Hens won the opening game, 6-1.

GAME 1:  Delaware 6, Mount St. Mary's 1

Delaware (8-12) scored four times in the bottom of the fourth to break open a close game to earn a 6-1 win in the opening game of the doubleheader to snap the Mount's four-game win streak.

The Blue Hens broke a scoreless tie with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second on a Halle Kisamore RBI double and a Brooke Glanden run-scoring single.

The Mount (10-13) got a run back in the top of the fourth to slice the lead to 2-1.  Morgan Alisauckas singled to lead off the inning and Lindsay Heinze walked to put runners on first and second with no outs.  After a pair of outs, Bonshock singled to left center to plate Alisauckas with the Mount's lone run of the game.

Delaware broke the game open with four runs in the bottom of the fourth.  The scoring outburst was capped by a Kisamore two-run single.  Delaware had 13 hits in the game, with four players recording multiple-hit games.

Shelbee Holcomb went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles while Bonshock was 2-for-3 with an RBI to lead the Mount offense in the game.  Amanda Berkley started and took the loss, allowing six runs in three-plus innings of work.  Katie Olson pitched three scoreless innings of relief for the Mountaineers.

GAME 2:  Mount St. Mary's 7, Delaware 3

Mount St. Mary's rallied to earn a split in the doubleheader with a 7-3 win in game two.  Stoner drove home four runs in the win while Avery Neuhart tossed five innings of scoreless relief to pick up the win.

The Mount broke out to the early lead with a pair of runs in the top of the second.  WIth two outs and no one on base, Kate Wade and Mariah Godde posted back-to-back singles while Kirsten Mumma walked to load the bases.  Stoner followed with a two-run single to put the Mountaineers ahead, 2-0.

Delaware took the lead with three runs in the bottom of the second.  A walk and a  Brittany Mendoza double put runners on second and third with no outs.  Karolina Flores then singled to plate the first run, and Mendoza scored on an error to tie the game at 2-2.  Chayanna Gallardo's RBI single gave the Blue Hens a 3-2 lead.

THe Mount took the lead with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth inning.  Bonshock led off with a single and Jessica Nines was hit by a pitch.  The bases were loaded when Emilee Kirk reached on a fielder's choice, setting the table for Stoner, who doubled to right center field to bring home two runs to give the Mount a 4-3 advantage.

The Mount added three insurance runs in the top of the seventh.  WIth one out, Heinze and Bonshock posted back-to-back singles to put runners on first and second for Nines, who doubled home pinch-runner Megan Black for a 5-3 lead.   Godde then singled to short to push the Mount's lead to 6-3.  Wade was able to score on an error by the Delaware catcher for the final run of the frame.

Olson started for the Mount, allowing three runs in two innings of work.  Neuhart picked up the win with five scoreless innings of relief, allowing five hits while striking out three.

GAME NOTES:  The Mount is 6-2 over its past eight contests...The win in game two was the Mount's first-ever win over Delaware...The Blue Hens had won the first 21 all-time meetings between the two schools.
