NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. (January 13th, 2020) – The Mount St. Mary's women's basketball team (8-8, 3-1 NEC) was dropped by Merrimack (10-6, 3-2 NEC) 76-55 on Monday night in North Andover, Massachusetts. The Warriors had four players finish in double figures to lead them to the victory. Denia Davis-Stewart recorded a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds for Merrimack. Aryna Taylor (13 points), Rebecca Lee (11 points, 8 rebounds), and Michaela Harrison (12 points, 4 steals) all had a strong game for the Mountaineers. The loss snapped the Mount's 3-0 start to Northeast Conference play.
The first quarter was a back and forth battle between these two squads as every time the Mountaineers seemed to put one in the hoop, the Warriors would have an answer and vice versa. Rebecca Lee and Michaela Harrison (2-for-2 from three) each had six points in the first frame. The second period is where the Warriors offense seemed to heat up using a 9-0 run to take a 31-16 lead over the Mountaineers midway through the quarter. Merrimack outscored the Mount 23-14 in the second quarter to take a 38-28 lead into the break.
The Warriors offense did not slow down in the second half as their hot shooting propelled them to a 57-31 lead midway through the third frame. Shooting 4-of-6 free three-point range and going 9-of-10 from the line had Merrimack up 22 points heading in the final quarter. The Warriors would eventually cruise to a 76-55 win in their first ever matchup against the Mountaineers.
The Merrimack offense shooting 50% from the field and 47.6% from beyond the arc doomed the Mountaineers. The Warriors also getting to the free throw line 25 times tonight and converting on 20 of those opportunities ultimately led them to victory. These two teams will meet again on February 23rd back in Emmitsburg.
The Mountaineers will next return home to Emmitsburg for a three-game homestand that begins with Central Connecticut on Saturday, January 18th. Tip-off is set for 1PM at Knott Arena.
