Farmville, Va. (March 3, 2018) – Mount St. Mary's nearly erased a four-goal deficit in the second half, but the comeback attempt fell just short as Longwood held on for an 11-10 victory in non-conference women's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon.
The Mount took a 6-5 advantage into the halftime break, but a strong surge from Longwood to open the second half pushed the Lancers out in front. Longwood tallied the first five goals of the second frame, including a pair from Kaitlin Luccarelli, to open a 10-6 advantage at the midway mark of the half.
Beanie Colson put an end to the Lancers' run on a free-position goal with 14:52 on the clock, but Riley Dolan answered for Longwood just over two minutes later to make it a four-goal advantage once again at 11-7.
Both teams were held off the board in the ensuing eight minutes of play before Alayna Pagnotta found the back of the net off a feed from Carly Miller to close the deficit. Colson followed with her second goal of the contest with 3:24 remaining off a pass from Pagnotta to bring the Mount within a pair, 11-9.
With just 1:36 left in the game, Taylor Carhart converted a free-position shot for her second goal of the game, cutting the Longwood lead to 11-10.
The Lancers were able to hold off the Mount in the final minute-plus of action to escape with the one-goal victory and improve to 2-4 on the year. With the loss, the Mount dropped to 3-2 overall.
Longwood's Dolan topped all scorers with five points (3g, 2a), and Luccarelli, Madison Stair and Dana Joss each added two goals. Imani West collected the win in net with a 13-save performance.
The Mount held an advantage in shots (33-22) and draw controls (14-10), while the two teams were even in ground balls (20-20).
The Mountaineers are set for a home game against Lehigh this coming Friday (March 9) at 3 p.m.
