Emmitsburg, Md. (October 5, 2018) – The Mount St. Mary's women's soccer team topped Robert Morris by a 2-0 margin on Friday behind goals from Maddie Tchou and Jaylyn Chandler and a shutout effort in net by Maggie Barron. With the win, the Mount improved to 2-6-3 overall and 1-0-2 in Northeast Conference play.
The Mount nearly got on the board just over five minutes into the contest on a scoring opportunity from Chandler. Gianna Pomykacz sent a thru ball to Chandler, who beat a defender inside the box and went in on a 1-on-1 with goalie Julia Schmid. Chandler shot from eight yards out, but was turned away by Schmid as the match remained scoreless.
The Mountaineers held Robert Morris (3-11, 1-3 NEC) without a shot for more than half of the opening frame before the Colonials first attempt nearly gave them the lead. Bailey Farabaugh found a streaking Jane Schleicher, who got behind the Mount's backline. Schleicher fired from a tough angle, but her shot bounced off the far post and away from danger.
The Mount outshot Robert Morris by a 9-4 margin in the opening half, but the teams headed into the break deadlocked at 0-0.
Mount St. Mary's struck for the game's first goal just over a minute into the second half. Jenna West crossed one into the box and found Tchou, who fired a shot that was stopped by a diving Schmid. Tchou was able to pick up the rebound just a few yards from goal and found the back of the net for her third goal of the season.
With 22 minutes remaining in regulation, Kristina Kelley rifled a shot from distance that deflected off a defender's head and was ticketed for the left side of the net. Barron made a dive to her right and corralled the ball to keep the Colonials off the board.
The Mount had multiple scoring chances around the 10-minute mark, and eventually capitalized for the insurance tally. Off a corner, Robert Morris attempted to clear the ball out of danger, but the errant clearance went to Chandler inside the box. The junior one-timed a low shot past Schmid for her second goal of the season, giving the Mount a 2-0 advantage.
The Mountaineers were able to close out the 2-0 victory as Barron collected her first shutout of the season with a four-save performance. Schmid, who was busy all night in goal for the Colonials, made 17 saves.
Mount St. Mary's held a large 26-6 shot advantage and a 6-2 margin on corners.
The Mountaineers hit the road to take on Saint Francis U on Sunday, October 7 at noon.
